Briar Weatherley stands out in training ranks as one of the youngest members, but it would be hard to find anyone who could match the means by which she came by her licence.
“From a young age I always wanted to be involved in the family stable, and that included perhaps one day getting my own licence,” Weatherley told RaceForm. “I’ve worked alongside Dad for a few years now, but I didn’t see it coming when he told me that he’d like to take me in as his training partner.
“That was on my 21st birthday, so you could say it was the best 21st present ever!”
Weatherley boasts a pedigree steeped in racing. Her great-grandfather Fred Beguely was one of the best of his era with top class horses such as Kiwi Can and Glamour Bay, her grandfather Dan Weatherley and father Darryn both rode successfully and her brother Sam ranks amongst our best jockeys.
After celebrating her first win on the first day of the season, Briar can now call herself a Group-winning trainer following Pier’s impressive win in last Saturday’s Gr. 1 AHD Hawke’s Bay Guineas.
The bonus is that the Proisir gelding is owned and bred by Darryn and Louise Weatherley in partnership with 85-year-old Aucklander Barry Wright.
“It’s great for the family and having Wrighty involved as well is fantastic. He’s been a good friend of ours for as long as I can remember and he just loves spending time down here enjoying his horses.”
